Skin Cancer Checks in Sydney CBD & Bondi Junction

Schedule Your Skin Cancer Checks With Key Health

Australians love our outdoor lifestyles and making the most of our gorgeous sunshine - some of the sunniest in the world. At the same time, we have one of the highest non-melanoma skin cancer rates globally. This type of malignancy is the most commonly occurring in the country, with around two in every three of us likely to be diagnosed by age 70. This prevalence means that regular and thorough skin cancer checks are critical.

What Is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the abnormal growth of skin cells. It is usually but not always, in response to overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The change typically occurs on the face, neck, scalp, arms, hands, and legs but can also develop under the nails, the palms or soles, or the genital area.

Symptoms include flat, brown, flesh-coloured, crusty, or scaly lesions. You might also see a bleeding or scabbing sore that doesn’t heal, a waxy or pearl-looking bump, a mark with speckles, irregular borders or white, pink, red, blue, or blue-black colouring. In addition, any dark spots on mucous membranes, fingers, toes, palms, or soles are unusual. Most importantly, look out for shape, size, or colour changes.

A valuable tool for self-examination is the ABCD rule:

  • Asymmetry – Is the shape irregular?

  • Border – Are the edges blurry or uneven?

  • Colour – Are the colours unusual?

  • Diameter – Is the lesion bigger than 6 mm (the size of a pencil eraser)?

  • Evolution – Has the mark changed shape, colour, or size?

Keeping an eye on changes to your skin is preferable. However, even if you feel comfortable, scheduling a regular in-person skin check in the Sydney CBD or Bondi Junction is recommended. Almost all skin cancers can be cured if caught and removed early enough.

What Is a Skin Cancer Check?

Your GP or other medical professional will visually evaluate your skin. The inspection is head-to-toe, non-invasive, and takes about ten minutes. Please tell your doctor if you’ve noticed any new lesions or differences you’re worried about.

Your professional will check for any pigmented areas that look unusual. If there are any suspected abnormalities, they will do a biopsy, removing as much of the lesion as possible. The tissue is then sent to a pathologist to test whether it’s benign or malignant.

Your skin cancer screen is that easy. So why not schedule an annual appointment with Key Health today?
