Intralesional steroids and acne
Steroid or cortisone injections have two roles in acne. Firstly it can be used as an effective way of reducing inflammation of individual acne cysts that are angry and eruptive. It can help to lessen the individual lesion in a short period of time. Usually a tiny amount 0.05ml is injected into the centre as a once off treatment. This is used in special circumstances and not advised as a mainstay of acne treatment.
Secondly cortisone is used in the treatment of certain scars caused by acne. In particular the jawline may develop hypertrophic or thickened scars that persist for many years and can cause discomfort. One form of treatment is cortisone injections in amounts and frequency determined by the doctor. Atrophy (thinning of the skin) and hypopigmentation (loss of colouring) are potential side effects which can be minimised if done properly by an experienced doctor.
